In this edition of our newsletter, let's start by taking a trip down memory lane to 2007. Our protagonist, Melanie Perkins, was just a 19-year-old student at the University of Western Australia when she identified a problem - the complexity of design software. She took the first step towards the solution by launching Fusion Books, an online tool designed to simplify yearbook creation, which later became the most extensive yearbook publisher in Australia.
The Road to Canva
The success of Fusion Books sparked an idea in Melanie's mind - to create a more general design tool that everyone could use. She envisioned a platform where users could easily design anything and everything. This idea led to the birth of Canva. However, the journey was not easy. It took Perkins three years of constant rejection and resilience to find the perfect investor who believed in her dream. In 2013, Canva was officially launched, and the rest, as they say, is history.
The Rise of a Multi-Billion-Dollar Empire
Fast forward to today, Canva is one of the fastest-growing online design platforms globally, with over 55 million monthly active users. Its intuitive interface and a vast library of templates and design elements have revolutionized the world of graphic design. It's hard to believe that what started as a simple idea in a 19-year-old's mind is now a multi-billion-dollar empire.
The Future Forecast
The future looks bright for Canva. With its recent acquisition of interactive presentation start-up Zeetings, Canva is poised to expand its offering beyond design to become a holistic solution for all things visual communication. Perkins's vision of empowering everyone to design anything and publish anywhere is becoming a reality.
Tweet of the Day
Been on Twitter for a week.
Here is my #1 learning
People are more obsessed about arguing with others over what branding is and how to build one - than actually going out there and building one
