It all began in 1938 in Minot, North Dakota, when Charles E. Schmidt, Sr., a man of vision and entrepreneurship, started Tractor Supply Co. as a mail order tractor parts business. The company was born out of necessity, as farmers and ranchers needed a reliable source of parts for their machinery.

Growth and Expansion

Tractor Supply emerged from its humble beginnings to open its first retail store in 1939. The company has since expanded its product line beyond tractor parts, now offering a wide range of products from clothing and footwear to pet supplies, lawn and garden supplies, and more. Today, Tractor Supply operates over 1,900 stores in 49 states.
